Haldi Ceremony (Cleansing Ceremony)
The Haldi ceremony is the application of turmeric paste on the bride and the groom at their respective homes. The time of marriage is a very defining period. There is a change is person’s life cycle. To ensure a safe passage into the new stage, the Haldi is applied to protect the bride/groom against evil forces and strengthen her/him in the face of challenges. The Vedic mantras that are pronounced help to create the right atmosphere and strengthen the bride and groom.
When all the relatives and close friends have applied the Haldi to the bride/groom at their respective places, 5 or 7 women of the family, perform the chumawan rite with grains of rice. After the first round of Haldi is applied then the Chumawal is performed ladies are to perform this rite... Place a handful of uncooked rice in the palms of the bride/groom. On top of that place a whole laddu(round sweet) . Now each other one by one takes two bunches of grass and then take a little rice in the tips of their fingers and then start from the feet, knees, elbows, shoulders and then drop the rest in a cloth of the mother of the bride/groom who stands behind the bride/groom. To purify her daughter’s/son’s path and remove all obstacles.
